Worth knowing

The August 10, 2020 derecho.

The derecho that crossed Iowa on August 10, 2020 brought measured gusts of 75 to 85 miles an hour to the Des Moines area. It tore roofs off homes, collapsed walls and destroyed garages across the metro, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ranks it the costliest thunderstorm on record in the country. Central Iowa gets a smaller version of that most summers.

Storm repair goes wrong in two places. The first is the scope: a patch on a roof that is at the end of its life, or new steel on a garage whose frame has racked, spends the insurance money without fixing the problem. We write the scope to what we find, and if repair will not hold we say so before you sign.

The second is documentation. Adjusters work from photos, measurements and a written scope. We produce those in the format they expect, meet the adjuster on site if you want us there, and keep the claim between you and your insurer.

After the storm

Signs it is time to call.

Shingles in the yard or a lifted ridge cap

Wind got under the roof. Even a few missing tabs let water into the decking.

Dents in the soffit, gutters or AC fins

Hail large enough to dent metal has bruised the shingles too. Have it inspected before the claim window closes.

The garage door is bowed or the fence is down

Wind pressure racks light structures. Check the framing before the next storm, not after.

A branch came through the roof

Dry it in first, then have the framing looked at. A cracked truss is not visible from the ground.
