Why central Iowa matters

How Iowa weather is hard on a building.

Central Iowa runs a hard freeze every winter, a wet spring, and a summer storm season that occasionally produces something like the 2020 derecho. That combination decides how we build.

  • Frost heave. Des Moines publishes a 42-inch frost depth. Anything on a shallower footing lifts every winter and settles every spring.
  • Straight-line wind. The August 10, 2020 derecho brought measured gusts of 75 to 85 mph across the Des Moines metro. Truss anchoring and fastening patterns are where a roof stays on.
  • Hail. Spring and summer storms bring hail, so roofing, soffit and siding damage gets documented for insurers.
  • Snow load. Trusses and purlins are sized for a real Iowa winter on the roof, not a catalog minimum.
